Reflective Summative Statement

Through my research on Genevieve Gauckler I have learned a lot about current art and inspiration for art. There are so many things in a person’s life that they can experience that will influence them as a person and what they create in the way of art.
In this project I certainly learned about Gauckler and her art but I learned more about current day art as a whole. Certain aspects, like street art, I was very drawn to. I got to take a direction that interested me and gave me knowledge and inspiration to go and create my own art.
Gauckler has done both advertising and works that are simply works of art. There are many possibilities and directions a graphic designer can go with their art.
In the last posts I made I saw a style I am very interested in and would like to learn more about. The thing about this project is that it has opened me up to the concept of just researching anything that interests me for just that reason; it interests me.
That is a great way to become knowledgeable in the world and your art.
Gauckler lives and works in Paris. The city in which one lives can certainly have an impact on the works created. Different cities are known for different things, have different ways of life, and unique aspects, as well as many opportunities. Depending on what you surround yourself with your art can reflect your surroundings.
Gauckler has a unique, simple, colorful, vibrant, humerous, and somewhat childish charm to her work. As a graphic designer she has made her own style and molded it to a point where she has become successful and known for her style and her work. Processes like this project can give one insight to themselves in relation to art and the world. Those kinds of things shape them as a person and an artist. I have a strong interest in music, art, and design. This assignment showed me a little more what type of art grabs my attention, and helped me determine what direction I would like to go, and what I would like to do with art, more so than I knew before this project.
The world around us also grabs our attention more in certain areas than others. For example, with this project I was very drawn to cities and their landscapes for a portion of this blog. Places with as much going on, as big cities especially have no end of material to inspire an artist.
Gauckler did a whole art show on food. Food is something we encounter everyday and its most common occurrence in art is in bowls or baskets for still lives. It is very interesting to see an artist take a unique direction with art like Gauckler did creating an entire show of graphic design art centered on food.
Art is everywhere and inspiration is everywhere. Just as Gauckler surely has been inspired countless times by all kinds of things she has experienced in her life so will you and so will I as an artist. These things not only give us something to make art about but give meaning to our art as well. Art connects with the people who view it. The world connects with the artists who then are inspired to create something that connects with the world. Art represents ideas and it can be a very fun and exciting thing when the artist is inspired to create something that means something to them.

AVT 101 Midterm Paper

Genevieve Gauckler is a graphic designer. Her art has an abstract style. Almost all of her works have a simple design style with vibrant or brilliant colors. Her art is fun loving and creative. Being a graphic designer, she often incorporates text in her designs. The majority of her work consists of simple ‘cute’ monsters/ creatures. The creatures’ bright white eyes pop against the value-less flat shapes of their bodies. Many of her pieces contain elements of humor. An example is a design she has with a creature lacking of a face and a caption that reads, “How can you actually eat when you don’t have a mouth?” In the bottom right hand corner is a small casket and a caption that reads, “Unfortunately, there’s no way. You may die very soon.”
Genevieve also has done a few detailed designs that contain bits of photographs as well as computer design. When explaining a design that is essentially an enormous pile of food and a few other objects like human hands and legs, she reveals her interest in tourists and also mentions that the pictured dog is her pet dog. It is aspects like this that bring to our attention how things from artists and designers lives impact their artwork. Genevieve was born in France and has said she has always been interested in Asian culture and religion. In the picture at left you can see her design for a flyer advertising her show in Tokyo; based on this information it would be reasonable to conclude that France and Asia have both probably made significant impacts on her as a person and as an artist. This fact could have contributed to her style and design and helped shape her work to what it is today. In a video on YouTube she actually mentions Asia affecting her work as well as projects she has done in Asia. She specifically talks about how she did a wall painting in Japan and that inspired her to do one for the gallery she was presenting in. She painted on a wall large characters in bright orange and bright blue. The contrasting colors and simple designs make a bold image combined with a large pile of food packaging ‘trash’. Genevieve says she would have liked to make it larger. When art is made large scale it can really have a big impact on the viewer.
Genevieve likes characters, stories, and text among other design components. This all is apparent in her work and unique style. Genevieve has obviously made an impact in the design world. Otherwise, Coca-Cola would not have utilized her in an advertisement. Coca-Cola is a powerhouse company and has always stayed up to date and current with exciting and interesting advertisements. I have seen many very artistic Coca-Cola advertisements and commercials. This image at right is one Genevieve Gauckler designed for the company.

This Image at left is my favorite I have seen of her work. The Bright colors of red and blue are split evenly down the middle. This divides the picture into two halves in a way. I also think the simplicity is what makes this piece such a strong image.  The fact that the eyes are looking left with only one right and not up and down gives the impression that the creatures are looking around almost cautiously or timidly. It gives me the impression they are in a strange habitat they have never seen and are exploring it with their eyes for the first time. The fact that the creatures do not have mouths also adds to the interesting ‘timid exploring’ look of their ‘faces’ in my opinion. I really like how the creatures are poking out of the black holes. It completes the look they have and makes a big impression on the viewer with the overall scene. I also like this picture even better because of its location and the environment it was created in. If I were walking by this image on the sidewalk, I would have to stop and take a picture.
Genevieve Gauckler has created a unique and bold style with her work. The simplicity of her design is the strength and consistent element that drew me to her work, that as well as the creative, unique, and seemingly fun loving characters. The final element that brings her work full circle is her color choices; they really set the mood for her work.

Pharrell Williams and Design

Pharrell Williams:
Both his band's website and his clothing company have incredibly well designed web pages as you can see after you click the links below. Especially the band N.E.R.D. has a very cool visual right now when you run the mouse over the face in the center of the screen. Pharrell is also heavily into design of all sorts himself.

Hip-Hop, Graphic Design, and Clothing

Modern Graphic Design, Clothing, and Hip-Hop music all have become intertwined with some musical artists like Pharrell Williams and The Clipse. Also There are companies that have grown in the "Backpacker" Hip-Hop industry that have strong graphic design influence as well. Examples will be in the following posts.

Kanye West- Runaway

Film is an expanding form of art that has really made leaps with modern technology. Keeping with the music theme, Kanye West is an incredibly artistic muscian. He recently put out this video he self directed titled Runaway.

Music Videos are Art.

Music videos themselves have become increasingly elaborate. There is all kinds of work that goes into a music video artistically. This is an example of a music video that takes on a whole new concept of video, It is essentially a live video that seems to represent a painting. This truly incredible concept is below. The song is called Stronger by Kanye West

Kanye West- Stronger (Daft Punk Sampeling)

This is an example of a hip-hop song using sampling from Daft Punk a successful electronic band well known for their techno beats. Kanye West has been very successful with sampling music to create new beats for a new and growing genre of music.  Music connects the world from Paris to the USA and everywhere else.

Kid Cudi - Pursuit Of Happiness ft. MGMT

Here is an example where MGMT worked directly with a hip-hop artist, Kid Cudi. Hip-hop is a modern trend and very successful genre of music, there is no denying this. Modern artists often are influenced by modern trends to some extent. In a modern world, music and art both are progressing.

Opposite of Adults: Chiddy Bang

In a sampling (Wikipedia gives an accurate definition of the word and its intended use HERE.) of Kids by MGMT, Chiddy Bang created Opposite of Adults. Sampling is a very common method of creating beats in modern Hip-Hop music.

MGMT

MGMT was one of the bands on the poster from the previous post. Here is one of the bands most famous songs, Kids.

This song actually relates  to Gauckler's work quite a bit. Her work has many cute monsters, giving it almost a childish charm. The song above is about monsters and children so it ties in nicely to her work. This again gives an example of how well music can relate to art and vice-versa.

Poster for Music Festival by Gauckler

This poster is just one example of how music and art can often go together. Art can compliment music and music can inspire art.
